Set 1
​

Alliteration - repetition of initial consonant sounds
Assonance - repetition of vowel sounds in stressed syllables that end with different consonant sounds
Consonance - a kind of slant rhyme in which the ending consonant sounds match, but the preceding vowel sound does not
Repetition - using the same words or phrases more than one time to make an idea clearer.
Rhyme - repetition of sounds at the ends of words. End rhyme is a rhyme that occurs at the ends of lines. Internal rhyme occurs within lines. Sight rhyme occurs when two words are spelled similarly but pronounced differently (“gave” and “have”)
​Rhyme Scheme - the pattern of end rhymes
Rhythm - Pattern of beats or stresses in a line
Sound - sound devices are resources used by poets to convey and reinforce the meaning or experience of poetry through the skillful use of sound.​
Set 2

Antagonist - character, group of characters, institution or concept that contends with or opooses the protagonist
Characterization - the development of a character in a story
Description - identification based on sensory* details (*5 senses)
Direct Characterization - what the author says about character
Dialogue - a conversation, denoted with quotation marks
Dynamic Character - character who undergoes personal development and growth throughtout a text - gradually or due to a crisis/main event
Flat Character - one dimensional, defined by a single characteristic, author gives few details
Indirect Characterization - what the author shows (not tells) to reveal the personality of a character: STEAL (speech, thought, effect on others, action, or looks). 
  • Direct Description  (Looks) - physical appearance
  • Behavior (Action/Speech) - what the character does or says
  • Values & Beliefs (Speech/Thought) -  what the character holds dear, or prioritizes, in life
  • Interactions with Others (Effect on Others) - how the character relates with others
  • Internal State (Thoughts) - the character’s private thoughts and emotions 
Minor Character - character mentioned only briefly - even less than a flat character
Point of View - the perspective from which a story is told
Protagonist - the main character in a story in a work of literature
Round Character - complex character, author spends a lot of time developing
Static Character - character who remains stable and unchanging in their personal development
​Sympathetic Character - a character whose situation you understand or can relate to
Set 3

Cliffhanger - a story or event with a strong element of suspense
Flashback - an occurrence in which a character remembers an earlier event that happened before the current point of the story
Foreshadowing - clues about events that will happen later in the story 
Irony - a technique that lets the reader know the full significance of a character's words or actions, even when the character doesn't
Mood - evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and description
Setting - the time and geographic location in which a story takes place
​Tone - an attitude of a writer toward a subject
